What Is Internet Exchange Point (IXP)?

An Internet Exchange Point (IXP) is a physical location where many networks interconnect to exchange traffic directly, rather than paying a transit provider.

IXPs are the meeting rooms of the internet — neutral facilities like LINX in London or DE-CIX in Frankfurt where hundreds of networks peer. Peering at an IXP keeps traffic local, cheaper, and faster than routing it through a transit provider.

Which IXPs and facilities a network is present at says a lot about its scale, geography, and resilience. WhisperGraph models this physical layer: `INTERNET_EXCHANGE` and `FACILITY` nodes, with `IX_MEMBER` and `AS_PRESENT_AT` edges from each ASN — depth that DNS-only tools don't reach.
